My name is David Bell. I’m an artist, making paintings from my studio in Sanremo, Italy. My paintings are inspired by my journeys through the landscape, travelling usually by motorcycle though the verdant valleys around me.
For many years I’ve been studying a honours degree in Fine Art at the Open College of Arts, an art college within The Open University. I’m now in my final year (2023-2024), and excited by the prospect of graduating and moving to the MA programme.
My studies have revealed to me how everything in my life comes out in my art, in one way or another, and this seems true for a lot of artists. In 2023 I started publishing this blog about art and my life in Italy. I want to share with you my painting practice, my painting inspirations, and my musings about life on the Italian Riviera of Flowers.
A Note on the Fair Use of Images
When I use an image of an artist’s work in my Substack pages, it’s used according to the ‘fair use’ rationale, being that:
it is a significant artwork;
the image is only being used for informational and educational purposes;
the image is readily available on the internet; and
the image is a low resolution copy of the original artwork and is unsuitable for commercial use.

I am happy for writers to use my own images under the same fair use rationale, and will appreciate acknowledgement of copyright ownership.
